MTD: Quiet Noise Review

  Stone   2019/11/24

A lot of us didn’t know of Mass The Difference until he tagged J Cole and Cassper Nyovest on a video of him spitting his raps. The awkward-looking kid then got a cosign from Cassper in the form of a verse on the same song he tagged him on. That was What’s Wrong With Me. The ball was in his court.

He did a good enough job of maintaining his presence after that while he worked on releasing a full project. That project comes in the form of a mixtape. An oxymoron like Quiet Noise is exactly what you expect a boombap rapper like Mass The Difference to use as a title for a project. Something to spark a thought.

First things first; dope beat selection. Track after track, each one carries so much soul. He’s got the boombap flows on lock, with a cadence to match. He dabbles in a trap flow on Kamikaze just to show he can do it. Something to note, he keeps it authentic. A lot of rappers that look up to Cole try to sound like him, not MTD.

Odd enough, I wasn’t feeling the singles he dropped leading up to the release of the mixtape but hearing them on here made me give them a proper listen and all I have to say is damn!! They resonate much better. That might be the case for some people as well. They may need to hear this mixtape to be converted.

I like that a strong track like Damage comes in so early in. It gets you to pay attention if it was wavering for any reason before. The wordplay and delivery on Shooting Star makes him exactly that – A SHOOTING STAR. It only gets better on Newest Wave. He does that thing where he doesn’t rhyme the fourth bar in some cases. It must be to mess with fussy McFussingtons like me. But somehow that’s easy to condone, it gives the music a raw feel to it.

You can go to any track to introduce a newbie to MTD. MTD oozes confidence and comfort on his joints. Survival tactics, Damage, Listen To Friday … you could literally pick any track and you won’t find him slacking. Recognize is just about the only bad track on the mixtape. This is due to no doing of MTD, he kills his verse. The feature verse doesn’t pack the right amount of polished to go with the track. He did a great job even with his hooks, avoiding cringe-worthy choruses from vocalists.

17 tracks running for just over an hour. Skits are worked into tracks so they don’t just add to the track numbers. It took a full project for me to come to respect his song making abilities. The songs don’t come together to tell any particular story. You can play them on shuffle and still get the full experience of the mixtape. But they give us a good glimpse at what MTD can do.We get Mass The Difference going from track to track displaying his rap skills. To respect the skills, try rapping along when he speeds up his flow.

Quiet Noise has been well received by the streets. That’s because the appreciation for lyricism is on the rise. Also because MTD does such a stellar job, you can’t help but recommend it to the next ear. Definitely one of the best projects to drop in 2019. If you haven’t heard it yet, play below.
